• Rohlik’s relentless focus on customer service continues to attract new and repeat users, with 11.5 million orders made by over 800,000 customers across five countries in 2023
  • Already profitable in the Czech Republic and Hungary, Rohlik reached profitability in Munich within one year of launching new automation, proving that its highly efficient, tech-powered model for online grocery can succeed across Germany and beyond
  • Rohlik is quickly becoming the definitive model for online grocery with a best-in-class assortment, fast, reliable delivery, and an industry-leading proprietary technology infrastructure

Prague, Czech Republic, 7th March 2024: Rohlik Group (“Rohlik”), a European food retail technology and online grocery leader, bucked industry trends and saw another strong year in 2023, reaching €700 million in revenues and achieving 25% year-on-year growth. The company also reached profitability in Munich within a year of launching additional automation solutions to optimise operations and provide top-class customer service, which will serve as the company’s playbook for further expansion in Germany.

The European online grocery market has enormous potential for growth, with McKinsey estimating that as many as 30% of grocery sales could be online by 2030 in leading countries. However, the online penetration rate is currently estimated at less than 10% across most of Europe. Despite dramatic growth across the sector during the COVID-19 pandemic, few companies have been able to sustain it, with many struggling to reliably meet delivery windows, prioritising speed over service or offering only a limited assortment of goods at premium prices. As a result, many online grocers have seen customers return to brick and mortar stores.

However, Rohlik has gone from strength to strength with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 76% from 2015 to 2023. In 2023, more than 800,000 customers made 11.5 million orders across its five European countries of operation. Meanwhile, its relentless focus on providing outstanding customer service has continued to resonate with users: Rohlik’s high customer satisfaction and overall brand loyalty come through clearly in its Net Promoter Score (NPS), which is in the high 70s-80s depending on market, versus the grocery industry average of 26

Where other players have retreated from Germany’s €200 billion food retail market, Rohlik has reached profitability in Munich within a year of launching new goods picking and dispatch automation, demonstrating that high quality, customer oriented and fast online grocery can thrive within tough markets. The company, which was valued at €1.3 billion in mid-2022 and has raised $593 million from leading VCs including Index Ventures, Partech and Sofina, has a strategic focus on profitability and has already reached this milestone in two of its countries of operation, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

Rohlik’s focus on achieving strong unit economics across every market in which it operates and on creating a business model that is efficient and replicable means the company is now approaching break-even in all existing markets, and is currently targeting an annual run rate (ARR) of over €1 billion with positive cash flow for the 2024 financial year. 2024 will see Rohlik continue to invest substantially in automation technology, rolling it out further across Berlin and Vienna.

Founded in 2014 with a focus on delivering a better customer experience, Rohlik offers superior quality, efficiency and sustainability compared to quick commerce and traditional grocery models. Its success is driven by a best-in-class local assortment of goods with competitive prices and fast, reliable delivery, all powered by an innovative proprietary technology infrastructure:

  • Rohlik provides one of the broadest and most differentiated assortments available in the online grocery space, ranging from fresh food from local farmers and artisans to supermarket goods and private label brands.
  • Rohlik offers highly reliable 15-minute delivery windows and same-day deliveries available as soon as 1 hour after booking. Ninety-seven percent of Rohlik’s deliveries are on time.
  • Rohlik leverages a host of AI, ML and robotics technologies that drive efficiency and high productivity without compromising on quality. These technologies are implemented across the business to provide customers with high-quality service at every step of the journey.

Tomáš Čupr, founder and CEO of Rohlik Group, said: “Many people have questioned the long-term potential of online grocery, but we’ve always believed you can build a strong business on exceptional customer service. As we continue to forge the best path to providing a fantastic grocery delivery experience, it’s rewarding to see our efforts translate into another year of strong growth. We’re showing that high quality, customer oriented and fast online grocery can also be profitable and efficient, and we’re excited to continue to roll out new automation technologies in 2024.”

Combined with cutting-edge automation and pioneering fulfilment technology, Rohlik has demonstrated that it has found the winning formula. Rohlik is quickly becoming a leading tech player on the continent."
